I can't believe that it is already May! I still haven't completed my garden cultivation tasks. A record cold April has everything to do with this . . . it isn't just olde age .

The extra effort for garden prep became an issue when my neighbor decided not to hire the new tractor guy for tilling. That left me with the choice of paying $225 for doing only my garden! I decided to use the rear-tine. And, I got thru it!

Then it rained . . . well, it snowed, too. Anyway, it was over of 1" of precipitation. I had anticipated going back and tilling the corn, beans, tomato, melon, squash part of the garden. But, I didn't think I'd need to return to the Flower Corner where everything is in beds and where the ground was not only tilled but gone over with spading forks to the full depth of the 11" tines.

I had hoped to put the entire veggie part of this big garden into permanent paths and beds this year - no Tractor Guy messing things up in the Spring. Why not!?? Well, it is a lot of shovel work so, DW and I only got 5 new beds put in.

Daisy wanted to see my garden paths. This garden does not have odd angles like my Shady Corner and it has full sun. You can see the Shady Corner by clicking on My Page (click). That picture is tiny and I'll try to get another one . . . but I kind of need to get up really high. (The picture of this garden on My Page is from the southeast and doesn't show the Flower Corner, at all.)

Actually Daisy, I pretty much overstated my garden designing, anyway. True to my nature, it is all as practical as I can come up with ;).

Anyway, this is looking northwest across the Flower Corner at what I've been up to and have to return to with the tiller. In the distance are the new beds. Beyond that . . . I think I'd better just plant that to the warm-season row crops and leave the building of beds for another year.

edited to add: obviously, there aren't boards or anything surrounding my beds. i used to do that in the dahlias but not anymore even there.

You really look ok for where you are considering your season has been as it has, Steve. You are doing exactly what you can, when you can. From what I see, you'll have plenty to can when the season ends. HAHAHAHA (Me and dumb puns, I tell ya! LOL)

Anyways, you always go big, and between how much attention you have to pay your greenhouse and hoop houses you are doing all you can.... so don't worry! You are probably more ahead then behind. :)

Thanks, V!

I will play the part of the guy who is ALWAYS a half mile behind but catching up! Nothing motivates me like critters demanding to be cared for and some of my plant starts are behaving like Creatures from the Black Lagoon! "Outside! We want to go Outside!"

Those hoopies will have to go over these garden beds next! Ackk, No!

As far as canning - do some freezing. Actually did some caning yesterday where the neighbor's raspberries are encroaching in my garden! Dug up 4 canes and carried them off to my backyard ;)!

Your soil looks really good Steve. Looks like you've worked it into a nice good depth. Your hard work is apparent and I'm impressed. :)

I'm feeling way, way behind myself. So many things that need doing, and I'm trying to focus on the most important first...
I think I'll remember Seabiscuit and let him be my inspiration....

Steve..with 2 steps backward and 1 forward, you are still moving ahead. Maybe not as fast as you would like, but moving in the right direction nonetheless. ;)

Not that my input makes much difference... *I* think it looks good... and I'm pretty jealous of how much garden you have! :)

Does that make up for the good weather we're having? ;)

Thanks for the encouragement!

I don't know -- we all deal with bad weather of various sorts, at various times.

As I'm moving plants around the yard getting ready for the "Run to the Gardens" I was thinking about V's "you always go big" comment. You know, I was raised on the Rogue River in Oregon. Within a stone's throw, some of that time.

A long time ago, I "Went Rogue."

Steve ;)

have to check on that Seabiscuit after I get around the track

Looking good, Steve! That soil looks ready to go! I know everybody is excited about wood edges- but I agree with you- not necessary! Happy Gardening!

Don't feel bad Steve, at the rate things are going here for me I'm going to be looking for replacements at the nursery and big box stores for my tomatoes and sweet peppers.

Been a rough start to the season, I keep telling myself its gotta get better.
