with the weather being 25 degrees below normal, started out picking the spinach that has made it though all the freezing, was able to pick 2 boxes of small leafs. looked around and it was time to call it quits
and start putting the raised beds to sleep for the winter, so pulled up the majority of it today.

the only things left out there is a few
bib lettuce
carrots
bok choi
green onions
and 2 parsnips
the bok choi and luettuce will be picked next weekend and the rest hopefully will make it till christmas after that will be time to add some calcium and greensand and till it in and say see you next spring..

holy cow those brussel sprouts and parsley had some massive root systems on them some of the roots were 3 feet long....very impressive

Major' do you know about the NCtomatoman? Use that for a search term and you will find Doctor LeHoullier. I believe his degree is in chemistry and growing tomatoes was a hobby. He is retired now but not from tomatoes. An important figure in the world of heirlooms . . .

The NCTomatoman sells his plants at a Raleigh farmers' market. Vfem has found him there. I just did a Weather Service search for your community and it uses the Raleigh Durham airport so maybe you are close.

Some of that cabbage family does have tremendous root systems. They are supposed to be heavy feeders but it looks like you have been feeding them well ;). That should mean that there is a good supply of nutrients and organic matter in that ground for next year's garden. I like the idea of growing the brassicas just for how they leave the soil.

Nicely done glad to see someone's still harvesting their garden. Those carrots especially look great.

after the mandatory haz-mat meeting at work this morning drove back home fired up the truck grabbed nola off to lowes and picked up 20 bags of black kow compost< nola did very well inside lowes she needs a little more socializing and command work> drove home and spread out 10 bags and tilled it in. walked over to the raised bed were the spinach in growing well with the temperature swing we our having< now 20 degrees above normal > its growing again so it has received a reprieve for another week, so the other 10 bags are covered up waiting to be tilled in. where the spinach is growing has been slated to be the late potato bed so need to get it ready for next springs planting.

all the bok chio and some green onions/ carrots will be pulled later today for a rainy weekend pot of smoked chicken noodle soup :drool

jared being our first season doing raised bed gardening it has been a nicely strange pleasant extended season. the carrots are a main season type and the sweetest we have eaten definitely going to do that over next fall.

honeycomb if you want pallets let me know have tons of them down at work... and yes looking forward for our trading again,

with the night time temps in the mid 20's it was time to pick the rest of the spinach and tilled it up.
well that's one more bed shut down for the winter.

was able to pick a few spinach leafs for a shrimp spinach risotto dish and from another bed a couple carrots for a carrot cake
and a couple green onions for breakfast.

dont mean to rub it in seedcorn :frow
