We have just passed the anniversary of Robert Kennedy's death. Although something that we almost (anxiously) expected ~ link ~it was a dark time and so soon after his brother's assassination.

In 1968, that spring trauma to the nation came after the late winter Tet offensive and Martin Luther King Jr's death. I was young and hadn't developed much in the way of a perspective over time. There was a popular movie that came out that year. The final scene:

that was a great scene.

i have no memories of much from my youth when it comes down to popular cultural events. i didn't spend a lot of time watching tv until my early teens. i think the first event i remember from tv was Eisenhower's funeral.

While I have vague memories of RFK & MLK, I remember exactly where I was when JFK passed. It was announced over the school intercom. Many of the teachers were crying, and explaining to us what had happened.

I don't remember where I was with RFK and MLK but when JFK was shot I was standing in my kitchen in Ocean Falls when I heard over the radio (very bad reception on the only station we could get) that he had been shot and a few minutes later it was announced he had died. I never phoned my hubby at work, problems, I took care of myself.
In all the 6 years we were there this was the only time I phoned the mill and asked to speak to him, Nobody in the mill had yet heard the awful news.

I was on a huge ottoman in our living room in Amarillo watching TV when the news came on. I remember Mother calling Daddy at Amarillo AFB about it. I was in 3rd grade. I remember every detail of the next few days of America's sadness.

For Robert K, I was in eighth grade in Sacramento while Daddy was in Vietnam. We learned the next morning and I remember watching the news. But then, that's about all we did every morning and night - watch the news with Walter C., mostly about the Vietnam War. I took solace in my 45 rpm records during that time, saving up the dimes I made so that I could to buy another one.

I don't remember MLK, sadly. You'd think I would have, since we had just left Montgomery AL a few months before.
