I'll put this here despite not growing grapes. And, I'll be quoting numbers from the USDA nutrient database and the National Institute of Health, so be forewarned. Some might like to argue that looking at numbers for things called nutrients is just guided by opinion. Some might question the information source. Okay, it's my opinion on value to human nutrition and source. It's also my opinion that some opinions have more value than other opions but in a universe of uncertainty, that is open to infinite argument ...

Niacin is one of what are called the B-complex vitamins, I used it to simplify. The second number for each nutrient is what the NIH says is a minimum for me, me, ME!

Raisins,100 grams
  • iron 1.8 mg, 19.3–20.5 mg/day
  • niacin .8 mg, 16 mg/day
  • vitamin C 2.3 mg, 90 mg/day
Apple, dry, 100 grams:
  • iron 1.4 mg, 19.3–20.5 mg/day
  • niacin .9 mg, 16 mg/day, 16 mg/day
  • vitamin C 3.9 mg, 90 mg/day
So, my argument is that a Washington State apple is superior to a California raisin. (And, if I'm anemic, it's either unexplained or someone's fault, likely the government's.)

Steve
whose blood tests show that he's not anemic but what the heck do they know?!

In the interest of peace between people separated by vast distance, and Oregon sagebrush, I wish to note inappropriate times for consuming Washington State apple chips. (I also appreciate that no one attacked my anemic arguments that they are superior to California raisins.)

Do not eat apple chips after returning from an afternoon appointment to the dentist.

I can also add that putting raisins in your cereal bowl with the milk, several minutes before adding the cereal, will soften them and make chewing easier. Of course, there are appropriate times for adults to eat baby pablum, it just isn't all that common for them to have it in their house!

Steve
does this new crown make my teeth look smaller?

Raisins are as bad as candy for sticking to your teeth and promoting cavities. Not that this will stop me or the kids from eating them. ;) And apples provide bulk fiber, another plus. I've heard the whole apple-a-day thing has much truth to it. They're supposed to help ward off colon cancer and stabilize blood sugar.

Raisins are a great source of energy for athletes. It is also a food that has almost no intervention by mankind. I am fortunate that I have a souce down in the central valley which is raisin country ;). I get plump, soft raisins without any sulfur added to them. They are also the ones that are the highest grade and get exported to fetch higher prices. The store bought ones are so crappy. So, I eat raisins and apples. ;)
