I am seeing such difficult snow situations today in South Dakota & Minnesota on the teevee . . ! I think I'll go out and kick around my last pile of snow on the way to covering up the onions in the greenhouse ;).

Earlier, there was a little walk on our sunny, chilly day here and I found these snowdrops beside a little creek:

Since those haven't quite opened and don't really amount to much, maybe it is okay to post these from an earlier year :coolsun :

Sure, Steve it's fine for some folks to just subtly brag about their lack of snow while their neighbors are still crunching thru the last 3" that fell last week or whenever it was. It's alright, it doesn't make me feel like a racehorse left at the gate or anything...;)

I think snowdrops are the earliest blooming fall bulb. That picture sure does justice that Spring will be on it's way soon. The birds singing is so nice to hear hopefully its a good sign, Winter will end in a few weeks.

I have seen those snowdrops blooming at the edge of piles of melting snow . . .

Just aren't quite there yet. And . . . it looks like the snow and even single digitS' are coming back this week in this neck of the woods .

Can't be too long . . . I gotta say that I've darn near run off the road when I've seen blooming snowdrops :p. And, I just tried to send my daughter a robin's song on her telephone. I need to work on the technology of that ;).

I can't remember . . . they look something like this, don't they?

For everyone on "robin watch", they've made it to Amarillo! Had about 5 helping me in the garden this afternoon.

Anybody know where they spend the winter?

These days, DesertCat, I have a good view from this computer of 2 tall walnut trees across the road. Just after New Years Day, I was surprised to see a robin in the top of one of those trees on 2 different days!

I think he was seriously confused as to why he was even around here - it had been a couple of months since I'd seen any of his buddies. It is now nearly 2 more months since I saw that one!

Amazingly, seeing a robin during mid-winter is not all uncommon. Certainly, it doesn't happen every year and with a very, very wintery November here -- any sane robin got the heck out of this country before winter even set in!

I think that they must have be kind of driven out and they may not go far all at once. I know that I have often seen robins during the winter along the Columbia River, on down to Portland and along the Willamette River in Oregon. All this country is at much lower elevation than here.

By the looks of this map from Cornell University, people in many parts of the US are probably laughing at us, pining for robins. (eBird, Cornell) I have set the map for January, usually the severest winter month. The lighter green squares just seem to indicate the odd robin. But, you can see that up to 25% of birdwatchers in quite a bit of the country are reporting robins in January.

I agree that spring is very near! On our little farm just this weekend we heard the beautiful sounds of the Cardinal's spring song! We have lots of them year 'round, but the song of spring is so distinct. Love all the Mr. Big Reds and their "ladies with the red lipstick"!:coolsun
