Dh and I got into such an argument about this.... Stupid me thought they really were "baby carrots". I actually wrote to the company, and asked the question. Man, I hate it when I lose a bet!!

And they spray them with bleach to make them nice n bright.

Some of the things bleach does to the body is listed. (I had to zoom it up to 200x to read the words.)

guess i need to get going on growing my carrots now! i have tons of seeds i just never got them in the ground this year. i tend to buy the 5lb bag of real carrots from the store every week. the dog mostly gets them for treats but i use them too. i never realized a lady at the grocery store i ran into was actually right about them being 'made' and not grown or shaved down to that size.

just scary the things i'm finding out that bleach has been used on. not a fan of the stuff with how sensitive my skin has become to surfaces treated with it.

Is that why they get 'slimey' so fast?? They've got bleach on them?

Just one more thing that makes me want to let the briars close over the driveway.. :rant

This article implies that baby carrots are ground up reconstituted baby carrots, but it doesn't actually say that. If you read it carefully, you will see that it says "Manufactured baby carrots are ........" Just like a person says "Unicorns are a horse-like animal with a single horn...." The sentence could be referring to a one-time experiment by students in food school. It doesn't say we buy manufactured carrots at Big-mart.

The chlorine bleach bath I believe.

We just need to be careful what we accept as truth. I am on an e-mail list for "natural health news." The main writer on there, I think he calls himself "The Health Ranger," seems to just pull information out of his butt, and pass it on as truth. I guess it's "anything goes, if you get the reader's attention." I don't even open those mailings any more, because they are so ridiculously false.

And I do buy organic whole carrots, not baby carrots.

My understanding was that the small carrots were "made" by shaving down the larger, imperfect carrots- not so much that they were reconstituted.

Yes, I think that is what they really do, but the statement about manufactured carrots kind of casts suspicion on the whole aspect of using pieces of big carrots, in my opinion.

May I suggest that we google organic chlorine/ chloride where we will find articles such as : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organochloride , eurochlor.org/...chlorine.../chlorine , hiporganicmama.blogspot.com/2009/.../carrots-chlorine-kids-oh-my.htm , etc. Many folks have been known to can and otherwise dry, and preserve their produce and meats and use sodium chloride ( salt)[ as well as other naturally occurring compounds in our environment containing chorine in their makeup) to enhance flavor as an value added product. Baby carrots are a value added product as well as canned sliced carrots, cut carrots into carrot sticks, carrot cubes, as well as carrot juice that come from the same carrot. "made" ? :idunno
