We have tomaotes worth eating. :weee Some of you will remember I was worried about the bad case of Blossom end rot. We stated hauling water (500 gallons at a time!) to the garden and watering every 2 or 3 days. They began to produce some nice loooking tomatoes. :) DH brought these in today and we put 10 quarts in the freeezer.

They look delicious! Guess looking at yours is near as close as I can get right now. All my plants are filled with green 'maters. DH says I need to pick the green ones off so the red ones have room to start. Luckily, I know better.

I must admit, I did taste my first garden tomatoes today. One volunteer plant growing in the beets (nameless at this time) was transplanted last week and I fear the stress of the move caused four cherry toms to ripen. Yum! Golden nuggets of real tomato flavor.

I just may have to save some seeds from this plant, too.

There are plenty of things you can do with green tomatos if you have a surplus. Pickled small green tomatos are great in salads. my mother used to make a green tomato relish with chopped walnuts in it. DEE licious. She also made green tomato jelly. Sadly, her recipe book disappeared after she died.

hoodat, I know what you mean about losing the old recipes. I never thought to pay attention or ask about some favorite recipes when the elderly relatives could pass them on, now we don't find them written down. So much was kept in thier heads!

My grandmother's recipe book had a chicken "something" recipe that started out: "First you kill and clean a fat hen......"
Unfortunately, my sister got it when Mom broke up the household.

I am looking forward so much to a tomato harvest . . .

Every day lately, there is a conversation with someone about tomatoes. I think DS just switched me off after about 5 minutes. It seems to me that everyone should have, at least, half the interest I do in tomatoes. I might be wrong.

He did pick up his ears when I mentioned "melons." Sure, something that barely grows here . . . I may be able to get a display like Carol Dee's husband set out there. There will be more cherries than I care to pick after awhile, I know that. Good exercise tho' - that tomato picking ;).

Yep. Beautiful tomatoes!
