The greenhouse is just about finished and I am starting indoor gardening so I purchased some seeds for unusual varieties of lettuce recently. One variety I just started is Thai Oakleaf, the light green plant on the upper left of the photo. Today I finally got around to reading the complete description, and this lettuce is supposed to have a distinct almond flavor. Almond is my very least favorite flavor in the whole world. Why anyone would breed almond flavored lettuce is beyond me.:( The red toned lettuce is Cimmaron and that looks fantastic. The two small green pots contain Golden Giant Marconi peppers that I hope will be on the menu for Thanksgiving.

I love almonds, but find that "almond flavored" never has much taste. Almond flavored lettuce? Who goofed that up? Maybe it won't be so bad.....snip off a leaf and try it. :hugs The Cimmeron looks good!

I would love almond flavored lettuce! I'll have to check that one out. I've grown cimmaron, it was awesome!

If you are serious it came from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. They have real low shipping rates.

I've grown Lettuce before that had a nutty flavor in the stems. Yes, developing an Almond flavored Lettuce sounds like a great plan. Everyone's taste buds are different and there are tons of other varieties to grow if Almond is not what you like. You have it growing, so maybe some of your family or friends will enjoy it.

My current favorite Lettuce is Freckles Romaine. It has the soft tenderness of a Butterhead instead of the crunchiness of most Romaines, but makes a nice sized tall Romaine head nicely blanched inside. Plus it has that really nice looking splashes of color. I let two plants go to seed of them this year right next to each other. One of those two plants was already apparently a natural F1 cross from several years earlier when I saved seeds from a Lettuce mix. The other one was pure Freckles. I hope some of the seed is crossed. My seed from both is that silvery color.

Fortunately my wife likes almonds, so I'll have the Cimmaron. Winter Density, Garnet Rose, Sweet Valentine and Schweitzer's Mescher are also underway, so there is a variety to choose from. Actually a better variety than the produce department.
