Middle of Dec I had some work done on my chimney. My friend Kristine was causally seeing the mason I used. He did the work in 2 days, I paid him in full. He left a heavy duty wheel barrel, some other tools along with a few used bags of cement next to the chimney. Over time I mentioned to Kristine about his tools left in the yard, she relayed message. She has stopped seeing his guy, to much drama. Today I noticed the wheel barrel is gone. I can not image him picking up wheel barrel and leaving his other tools. I have had things stolen from my yard a few times, ADT camera only inside. After over 5 months of leaving outside in my yard should I pay for wheel barrel if stolen ?

If he ever shows up ..

. and after "over 5 months," you have a ready excuse.

How the heck would you be expected to know when it was taken and who took it o_O?

NO -NO - NO absolutely not! Steve is right. How could you know when it left or who with? Not yours to babysit. (Not much of a business man to leave his tool behind and not return PRONTO for them.)

Listen to your friends here. NO You are not responsible if something left after a job was taken. Were you expecting to store them inside and stay home constantly in case he showed up to get the tools back? Seriously? You might consider sending him charges for allowing the things to be stored on your property.

How rude of him to leave his junk in your yard!

Same thing happened to my mom. She is a renter. Landlady hired some men to come put a metal roof on the house. They didn't quite finish the job (who knows why), and they didn't come back for 3 months. In the meantime she got tired of mowing around their junk. She asked my brother to move it to the side of the outbuilding. A couple days later the scaffolding was gone. Pretty sure I know who stole it. :\ Still, not my mom's fault. If they valued it, they should not have left it laying around. Very unprofessional.
