My watermelons are still growing, and looking pretty good. The largest one is about the size of a soccer ball, I guess. Should there only be one per vine, for maximum growth, or does it matter? The vines are still putting on little ones, that of course have no chance of ripening, but I have hope for the largest ones. There is probably another month till frost.

Culling only works for varieties that have an unlimited growth potential. For example, you can cull every cherry tomato but one and still only get a cherry tomato. Same holds true for certain watermelon varieties.

I usually allow 2 per vine, just to allow each melon an opportunity to reach their full potential. Too many, and they'll come in considerably undersize. Watermelons are heavy feeders. Another good thing to do is to chop off the vines that go too much past the fruit you are setting or are on other branches outward. They'll waste all of their energy making vines and not on feeding those melons.

Well, may as well snip off those that have no chance of getting ripe.
