I have my asparagus seed... trying to sort out when I should start it so that I have plants to set out at the right time.

I'm thinking they go out in the fall, then they overwinter (mulched?) and do their thing the following spring?

Does anyone have tips on asparagus care and feeding?

asparagus started from seeds can take 3 or more years to produce the edible parts you want. they will look really neat though while they are growing out! i have some i planted last year and this year they look like the asparagus ferns you see at greenhouses as a house plant! i never realized why the greenhouse plant was called that!

they probably should have been started weeks ago so you could get them out in the ground for the summer. you need to trench them deep and fill the soil in around their stems to get them to continue growing up through the soil as the summer goes on. that way they will survive the winter months with little mulching. we have trees that do the mulching for us on our property.

btw, i was told they are heavy feeders since they are perennial veggies. so amend the soil where they will be permanent so it is ready for them!

Get them started now-- then transplant when they seem strong, and a few inches high-- buried deep in a trench, as mentioned before. Do some googling on how to grow them, etc.
I have an established patch here- was here when we bought our place 3 years ago, but did start some from seed last year to add to the patch, since it's kind of sparse. I actually just "tried" six seeds in a pot-- let them grow, and hubby tossed the pot in a pile last fall-- I thought all was lost til we found them growing in the same pot this year.

It's been wet and buggy, so they are still in the pot- growing like weeds-- about 2 feet high-- six separate sections-- all much bigger than last year. I'll be getting them in the ground , in a new section of the asparagus patch, before too long!

I hate to hijack, but my question is along the same lines.

Can I put asparagus seed in my existing asparagus bed? It is really sparse this year as only a few crowns made it after planting.

We had asparugus come up in the garden where seed blew into it from exisiting plants that had gone to seed. go for it! Good Luck.
