I saw someone mention it in the "how's your garden doing so far" thread and I'm just wondering if anyone else does it? I try to but with two kids and about a million other things going on I miss sometimes. It works like this (roughly) : plant above ground crops when the moon is waxing to full, below ground crops when waning to new moon. There are " more fertile" days to plant based on the moon's position in the sky ( the zodiac constellations) and also barren days when it is supposed to be good to pull weeds/kill pests. Some will probably dismiss this as superstition , but I try to do it anyway , just in case , since my garden needs all the help it can get. Just wondering if anyone else does this and if it helps/hurts/no difference ? Ought to be interesting to see what everyone says.......

I have heard these things, I want to say my grandfather talked about at one point. But it wasn't so much zodiac talk, as it was how to read changes in the season and inbetween seasons to plant. Kinda like, if we didn't have a calender those were options.

I was really young then, and its not coming back to me some of the exacts he said. I must have been 8 or 9 at the time. So 20 years ago!

I guess I really should call him one of these days and ask him some questions. I know he still gardens at my Aunts house who he lives with now. Though I'm sure gardening in NH won't really help me with mine here in NC.

Sounds interesting.

I would have thought that if there is something behind this idea that there would be a gardening calender out there telling everyone when to plant and harvest.

I might have to do a net search on this idea during lunch.

Well, I don't know if this is the same thing, but my family has always planted peas, potatoes, onions, radishes and carrots on Good Friday.
It's the spring equinox and a full moon.

Also, we sometimes get snow after Easter (depending on when it is) and all those crops are fine with a little snow on them.

There is also a zodiac "man" where each sign governs a part of the body. Example: Cancer is also known as the breast, Leo the heart, Scorpio the loins, Saggitarius the thighs etc. etc. You plant under the "fertile" signs like breast, loins etc. You don't plant under infertile signs like the legs(Aquarius) or the heart or the bowels(virgo). You also hear of stuff like " plant corn when oak leaves are as big as a field mouse's ear " and a bunch of others I can't remember. This is what the farmers almanacs use when they list best/worst days to plant. And there are calendars- lots of hardware stores used to give them out- just not as common anymore. People have done it for a long long time must be sumthin' to it :)
