I've got an avocado pit and I'm interrested in growing an avocado tree. Anyone know how?

I have never had one make it past 3' tall and I don't know exactly why that is but I can tell you how to get one that far at least.
To sprout the seed, hold it small end up like an egg. Poke a toothpick in each side about half way down at a slight upwards angle. Place the seed in a clear glass of water so that the toothpicks rest on the sides of the glass and the bottom of the seed is submerged in water. Set the glass in a sunny window sill and within a week or two it will sprout. Once the tree is a few inches tall and the roots are a few inches long you can transfer it over to a pot or I suppose if you are in a warm enough climate plant the tree directly in the ground.
