I got up and did some stuff with the animals and daughter... then I go out for a smoke at 9:15. There is frost in the grass in the shadow of the woods. Then my husband complains he had to scrape ice off the windshield!!! We're in NC... I'm not used to this until deep November.

Anyways, I've been hearing about how cold and bad it is in FL, and Ga?! Did the Farmers Almanac have a bad forecast for this year? Should I look into a generator?

I have to run out and harvest the last of my lettuce now  It was supposed to be next week, cutting it close, but it all looks so good and did so well... I harvested 2 heads Tuesday already for a dinner salad! My radishes won't be making it though. I have my fingers and toes crossed that my chicken will hatch my ducks still, even with this cold coming on.

It has been predicted by several sources that we will indeed have a colder than average winter. I don't know if that means stormier than average, though, just colder I think.

I both dread and look forward to the first frost. It is a scramble to get everything prepared, bring the last bits of food in, etc. but it is also a relief to be done (or at least mostly done) for the year!

Good luck with your duck hatch! :)

Sorry to hear you have frost already vfem :( . It does sound incredibly early though to be getting frost now, there in the south, wasn't it in the 90's there not too long ago?

Maybe you could cover the lettuce up so you don't have to rush and harvest it all at once. I hope all is going well with your ducks, why not give your chicken extra straw to keep the eggs warm.

Hoping this frost won't cause too much trouble! ;)

We usually get one light frost around February every year, I guess just to remind us we aren't quite tropical.

Steve made a complete idiot out of himself the night before last . . .

It was 38F at 3am at 2 of his gardens. That is, according to the nearest weather stations.

So, he was out there at 5am with a flashlight - feeling the grass. Of course, by then the clouds had moved in (covering that gorgeous harvest moon and brightest stars). He went home to find out that by the time he'd arrived there to check, the temperature had risen nearly 4 degrees!

Walking out and checking in the backyard is 1 thing. Getting in the pickup and driving 20 miles is another! And, letting your fingers do the walking on the internet is yet, a 3rd!

With certain types, it is easy to be misled no matter what path is taken . . .
