I am going to start my asparagus bed. I need to order the crowns, I assume now. I think they are planted in February in GA. Does anyone have a good supplier and is my assumptions correct?

Thanks, Melissa

ETA: My local extension agent said to buy Mary Washington for my area.

Check your local suppliers hangin'. Let your fingers do the walkin' and call around to a few feed and seed, nurseries, etc. Your extension agent might even recommend a local supplier. Of course check online as well and try and get the best bargain. I know the feed and seed I patronize will order for me (or anyone else for that matter) and sometimes that works out to be the best deal.

Your assumption is correct...anytime mid to late winter is a good time to plant for this year. If you can dig through all the ice and snow! :)

Thanks for the advice bid, I called a not-so-local seed and feed company (only 30 minutes from where I work, but opposite direction from where I live) and they will have Mary Washington asparagus crowns in February for planting.

I just need to get busy making that permanent bed for them. I have the perfect spot next to my house that gets full sun and is close to the water hose. I'm going to put drip irrigation down in the bed. The bed will be 3' x 24'. I just wonder how deep they will need. As its a permanent plant, I want to do it right the first time. ;)

Thanks, Melissa
