This is my second year with my asparagus bed. It is growing great. Now I have giant asparagus, going to seed. The problem is, the wind has blown them over, making it difficult to mow around and weed. Can I trim it back, now, or do I have for it to die back in the fall??

Depends if you want the seed of the plant up or not?! Maybe stake what you want up and cut the rest back? I'm not if you can have them come back all season, you'd have to ask someone who didn't kill their asparagus like I did. :/

IMO dont cut them. Just put a t post at each end, run string down one side, wrap around the post and then run back down the other side of the plants. I always leave mine as I think is helps feed the roots which makes more for next year. They get cut when they are dead and all the bright red seeds have fallen.

Thanks for the replies! I love the idea of an asparagus bed, but I shouldn't have put it in the middle of my side yard gardens. It just looks too messy for my taste. Oh well, live and learn...

I have an area that I'm making into a asparagus bed - I'm working on killing the grass right now with newspaper and a tarp. I'm so planting asparagus next spring!

I was at a farm this weekend and they had the asparagus growing with the rhubarb out of the main garden. Made sense to me...

My rhubarb and asparagus and herbs are out of the main garden, but that makes them in a more noticeable place, which is my problem. I would rather have them in the actual garden (not such high standard's out there!!) Can't wait to harvest asparagus!!
