Why in the world do I get so excited about gardening in NW Texas? A few beautiful warm days and I can't wait to get started.....then those terrifying winds start!!! Today the winds blew at 45 MPH and dust rolled....so glad my tender tomato plants were still in the house. Oh wait! There's another pretty day around the corner...go for it!! :tools

I feel your pain, luvsdirt. Our winds got up to around 50 for a while yesterday...40+ the day before. We get today off, but tomorrow it's supposed to blow again. :somad

And about those windbreaks, houses and large horse trailers work well. Anything else, not so much...unless you have the area to do a 3 row evergreen one.

We've had some very unsettled weather here lately too with 30 mph winds and gusts in excess of that. And so many thunderstorms for March too, almost daily. Such weird spring weather! I live on a ridgeline, so I get it all up here.:p

Normally wind isn't a problem around here but in Summer we sometimes get those Santa Ana conditions and we can get a wind that will knock you down with high temps and just about zero humidity. It can fry plants in just a couple of hours.

I have separate tomato cages wraped with clear trash bags to block the wind.

So, gardening friends, I see we all have to deal with the winds at some point. I agree about the windbreaks....it's hard out here. Boilerman, I like what you have done with the clear bags....probably will give that a try. :tools

That is just an example of mine. Each cage has it's own clear platic trash bag around it. When I get my tomatoes planted, I will post pics.

Here's my bags and cages to protect the tomatoes and pepper plants from the wind.

Oh yes, that will certainly work....you sure needed it today - winds 40+, temp. 99 degrees, and lots of dirt in Texas! I used some 3 gallon plastic buckets, cut out the bottoms and turned then over my tomatoes. Looking like nites in the 30s again this week. If you don't like weather today, wait until tomorrow....hahaha:tools
