Walking down the gravel road with DH and Penny, I spy what appears to be a blade of grass tied in a loose knot lying on the gravel. On closer inspection, I see that it is a tiny little green snake, that had been run over and squished. I guess it knotted up in its death throes. I had never seen a snake that tiny, and green snakes are my favorite. It honestly was no bigger than a blade of grass, but a little longer. While I mourned the loss of a harmless creature, DH reminded me that there were probably a lot more from that hatching. Maybe we'll see a live one there soon!

That's why the hatches are so big, most don't make it. But as long as enough do we're OK.

Most mornings I walk down to the mail box, a half mile down a private gravel road. I've seen several small snakes crushed. I just flip them into the ditch on the side of the road so critters that eat dead snakes can eat them. It's just part of nature. When I'm driving I try to miss the live ones. I like having non-poisonous snakes around, they eat a lot of bugs as well as rodents.
