About your winter diet . . . Already, my eating habits are changing!

As I was "casting about" to see what I could have with my yogurt, whole grain toast and coffee this morning, my eye landed on the fruit basket. DW bought bananas at Winco, yesterday!!

I grow that little patch of wheat most years, but I don't mill it into flour. I grew up milking cows, but I haven't done that for decades and have never made yogurt. Other than indoors, I've never even seen a coffee plant.

Dear Wife blanched 2 big pots of greens for the freezer yesterday. We've got soooo many greens right now! They will be coming out of the garden for a few more weeks if the temps don't fall into the teens. There's an enormous amount of lettuce out there that is just "baby size" at the moment. With a few radishes, plenty of onions, and an avalanche of tomatoes -- there's salad fixin's!

We have a "special arrangement" with the orchard not far from the big veggie garden. He will have apples coming out of his storage room until we hit sub-zero weather. We just have to show up at the right time of day to pick up a bag of yummy fruit, any old day!

But, all those peaches that came off our little tree, all those melons stacked like cannon balls in crates on our deck, all that fruit negotiated over from the farmers' market . . . down to 2 tiny watermelons . . .

We eat produce during the winter time. I am a little reluctant to call it "fresh." DW and I can agree on broccoli from the store. It has been months since the plants were producing broccoli in the garden.

I can't say some of the coins gained from that broccoli went into buying this bunch of bananas . . . it went into the kitty. And, there you have it.

I'll try to convince DW to make some tofu with these pounds of soybeans I grew this year. I don't suppose that all the spaghetti sauce we have been making would be good on it tho'. The freezer is stuffed and she is saying we should buy another . . .

There's dehydrated mushrooms and some in a can to go with that tofu, along with a basket full of onions in the basement . . . soysauce.

Life goes on; the diet that packs 15 pounds of weight on me every winter . . . this time, it will be different. I'll eat more broccoli. Limit the piles of fluffy, mashed potatoes! Push myself away from the holiday table, sooner! Stop myself from eating so many slices of apple and buttercup squash pie . . .

I'm with you, Steve! I am determined to drop 10-15 lbs and not gain it back this season. Going on a cruise in late January!

I have a long winter to go but I have the hopes of a new body/life next spring. I am going to stay on my WW plan until I become a life time member. I am lucky though. I don't have the dark days of norther latitudes. And I can grow most cool weather crops with some care until maybe January when I put new crops in. But I did save a few bags of squash, green peppers, hot peppers for winter. My collards, toy choi (I am about to replant more), brocoli should suffice for most of the winter. Now I just have to cook it... And then eat it instead of the yummy winter deserts.

Oh Steve.... I gained my weight right along with you this past winter. Sadly, this summer and all its activity did not remove the same amount... in fact I gained another 5lbs somehow?!

Anyways... 2 weeks ago I started a diet. I am really sticking to it, getting in my walks when I can, and making sure the house stays full of good for me stuff. :D

I've already been sneaking in the green pepper bag in the freezer, and the pre-chopped frozen onions. I've even brought home some tofu and tried that with a few meals. Marinated in ginger, soy, rice wine vinegar, and honey is pretty good with a sear on the outside. Load that onto a fresh salad and WALLA! Yum... and under 200 calories for lunch.

I've noticed I've been craving bananas again here as well. Maybe because I know the raspberries are done now, and the strawberries have faded to maybe 1 berry a day.

Either way, tomorrow will be the first day of the third week of my diet and I've already lost 6 lbs. So today I'm off to take a walk with my daughter.... and then home to can as much as I can can. Because I am nearly short 100 jars of jam for the stock I wanted to have for Christmas.

:ya I'm also hoping to drop 2 more lbs by the end of the week. If anyone wants to join me, I'm using Sparkpeople.com and its REALLY helping me get through and stick with it! (I do so miss those late night snacks, but I guess I'm just going to have to live with hot tea w/ no caffine instead.)
