I wished I would of had a tiller for this spot it was harrrrd. Do you think they should be cut back now or when the leaves come off? should we put some rabbit poo around them? do you think it would be wise to put straw around them for mulch. We hope these BBs live it was alot of work in a short time.

I would certainly use the bunny poo and the straw for mulch.

But bear in mind I have never grown Blackberrys.

Good Luck, they look great. :thumbsup

Straw mulch for sure. It depends whether or not your rabbit manure is composted. I'd be cautuous about using fresh. The canes aren't really ready for fertilizer yet. You may not know till next Spring how succesful you were. They should put out new sprouts from the base then if they took. I don't know how wet the Winters are where you are but don't let them flood and stand in too much water or they may rot.
I usually cut my canes back to about 6 inches or so before I plant them. It probably doesn't make much difference but it makes them easier to handle. You may have noticed a slight swelling at the bases of the canes (sort of a hard knot where the roots join the cane). That's where the energy to start the new shoots is stored.

BB's are one of those plants that wants to grow!! I predict they will all survive the winter and you will new growth by spring! They are very hardy and happy to grow in most any situation. A little straw wouldn't hurt... Good luck!

Are these the type that will send runners out and start new plants? I'm just picturing the BB shrubs that are present in the Pacific NW that are on the sides of roads and in So. Oregon and some of the shrubs are 10' thick (nobody is going in the middle to collect berries without full body armor!)

Just curious..

Thank you all for the advice think we will cut them back mulch with straw will hold off on the rabbit manure until spring.

RickF no these aren't the wild ones that grow on the west side. Seems like those thorns reach out and grab you if you stand to close LoL.
