Russets seem to grow in a nice shape and size for baking. (I myself prefer red potatoes but don't bake potatoes alot unless I do the cut up roasted mix vegetables):rainbow-sun

I was surprised to be told by a U of I extension agent that the Russet Burbank is grown on 80% of the potato acreage in Idaho. I had thought that with all the new potato varieties (including with russets) that those farms would still grow so many potatoes developed by Luther Burbank in the 1870's!

With a supermarket full of Russet Burbanks, I grew Goldrush Russets this year. They are a nice baked potato. I harvested them too early, however . . . They aren't holding up as well in storage as my reds & whites (gold).

I don't know whether to give them another go in '10 or not . . . there are lots of varieties out there to choose from but I didn't give Goldrush a fair shot.

edited to add: I grew Frontier Russet a few years ago and didn't get very good production. They seemed to want to give me one very large spud per plant and then a few little ones. Once again, they were fine as baked potatoes.
