Best Plants for Privacy

I am going to make my back yard more private, at the far end. I really do not like the idea of hedges, because I think they will look bad with the rest of my flower beds. What plants make good borders for privacy, but also look beautiful? Something that blooms would be great!

How high would you want these bushes or flowers? I am thinking you would need some sort of a bush - high flowers would be hard to find. How about azalea's? Those are very pretty.
