Today and yesterday we've had some showers. The thermometer hasn't hit 70f on either day .

So, is this neck of the woods headed into the Big Cool Down? Nope. The Weather Service predicts 2 days next week will have 90 afternoons!

I AM GONNA HAVE SOME SERIOUS RIPENING IN THE TOMATO PATCH!!!

The peppers can't do much, they are stunted from the cool spring. The melons may be just about played out - we will see, but they've done pretty darn good so far. This may be, however, the opportunity for me to enjoy a vine-ripened Brandywine tomato! I have an OTV Brandywine that has a good number of green fruits on it. We are moving into mid-September. The days-to-maturity go completely out the window when the nights begin to drop into the 40's. Doesn't look like it will be happening yet.

BTW - I know that the OTV Brandywine is the result of a cross. The folks had a tomato newsletter that they called Off The Vine when this plant first showed up in their garden. I don't think that I will ever venture to grow a Pink Brandywine altho' I've grown & enjoyed Prudens Purple which is said to be a "Brandywine type."

The Pantano Romanesco tomato plant in my garden is thanks to BareFootGardener. It is in the same "big plant, loaded with green fruit" condition.

The last 2 summers have been warm to hot and run late. I don't know if I can count on this. I doubt if I will ever have more than one of what is purported to be an 80 day tomato. Still, having one big, loaded plant . . !!!

Are there plants in your garden that are surprising you when you didn't really think they had much of a chance but conditions must have just happened to be favorable??

Exact same weather we are predicted to get... well we are in the high 80's. We were down in the 30's a couple nights ago. The big cool down may not be here, but I am afraid it is right around the corner. Still hoping to get some beans from a second planting....

I was thinking about you and your part of the world, Lesa.

Saranac Lake, NY is making national news. Chilly & colder soon!

I have picked beans a good number of times while wearing a warm coat. They surprise me how much chilly weather they can take. My "after the peas" beans are a little slow in making green beans. These very warm temperatures look like insurance for that crop.

I was out transplanting bok choy, today. Couldn't be better weather for that . . . showers again a couple hours after I got them moved .

Oh! Lesa, is that where you live, that lake Saranac? I just googled it. Wow! Pretty lake and place!

Even we are getting a heat wave. It's 90 degrees! The good thing is that it will be 87 today. We are just not used to this. :( I know I shouldn't whine since some of you live with these temps all the time.

Marshall, I don't think that Lesa lives on Lake Saranac.

Upstate NY'ers just use the climate there to scare everyone.

Sort of like how I use Stanley Idaho ;). It was 29f in Stanley, yesterday morning. Of course, it froze 8 times in August . . .

the only thing I've got surprising me in the garden these days is peppers. all kinds & they're just going like gang busters. everything else is caput. oh, I did discover a surprise red bud seedling growing in the raised bed. i'm going to have to give that serious thought where I want that little beauty to grow.

"All kinds" . . BJ ?

That would mean the sweet peppers, too - yes?

We still have dried hot peppers from 2012. I was kind of hoping for more of the Italian sweets that are on the menu for this afternoon. Only the 2nd or 3rd time we've had them this year. Very tiny plants for them and The Big Early bells . . . I don't see how they can produce more if they can't grow a little first.

Ha Steve, you are right, weather threads are not that interesting to me. I guess cause my weather doesn't vary too much.
