Black white wasp?

I saw this in the dirt below my elderberry.It almost looked like it was digging.Good or bad bug?

Was its face white? If so, it might be a bald face hornet. It is not that wasps are "bad" bugs-they are pollinators- but they will sting. They are not docile like a honey bee.

That does look more like a wasp than a bee, but I am not familiar with that one.

I usually leave wasps alone, unless they nest in an inconvenient place. As far as I know, most are predators and will attack and eat other bugs, many of them harmful. I consider them one of the good guys.

I can't identify that particular one but if it's digging it's almost sure to be a valuable predator that is digging an egg chamber. These little gals are a real help with my catterpillars. I sometimes watch them dragging a catterpillar four or five times their size and stuffing it down the hole so the kiddies have lunch. Sometimes I think they'll never get that big catterpillar down that little hole but they always manage.
