Deeply Rooted
I picked this up at the Huntsville Alabama botanical gardens. It is written especially for Zones 6,7,and 8 in the south by people who work at the gardens. It understands the freakish heat and humidity that comes with gardening down here.
It is broken in groups: annuals, perennials, shrubs and vines, and trees. It rates things based on how easy it can be to grow and care for. To get a blue easy ribbon a plant has to be low maintenance so minimal deadheading, low water demands, etc. This is a really easy book to read. It has lots of pretty pics and give really great in depth info about the plants. There are no veggies in it. It also write for a sustainable view point, which I love.
I am going to use this book to plan my first ornamental garden plants. Up till now I have only done veggies. I am going to stick with the blue ribbon easy plants for their ease of care and cause I have too much work already (bunnies, kids, dogs, veggies, ducks, work). Maybe there is a copy for your zone at your local botanical gardens.
