Borders is closing their doors :( This week all books ( actually everything) is 40% off. Do you all have any suggestions for MUST have gardening books?

Are all the stores closing? I should hurry in... or maybe not, because if there's anyplace more dangerous for me to visit than a nursery, it's a bookstore...
I love books, that's what I ask for at any gift giving holiday, garden books. Mostly I get the eyeroll, right after they glance at the groaning bookcase.

Here's some of my favorites:

These are reference books:

Sunset Western garden book, they do make one for the whole U.S now.

Manual of Woody Landscape Plants by Michael Dirr. I bought mine used on Amazon, but if Borders has it 40% off would be killer.
This is such a good reference and Dirr is a fun read, sometimes he cracks me up with a description.

The American Horticultural Society A - Z encyclopedia. Huge book, but excellent reference work.

The Ortho Problem Solver. Predictably they always recommend an Ortho product as a solution, but it's very valuable for identifying problems. Then you can decide on your own treatment.

A really useful pruning book is The AHS Pruning and Training manual

Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties by Carol Deppe is a fascinating guide to saving seeds and creating your own varieties, unique to your growing conditions.

The New Seed Starters Handbook by Nancy Bubel

Root Cellaring by Mike and Nancy Bubel

Organic Plant Protection Rodale Press

Rodales Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening Rodale Press

Let us know what you find Carol! :)

Thistle, Yes, ALL Borders Book stores nation wide will be closed. Very sad. Thanks for all the great suggestions. Yeah Book Stores can be mighty dangerous places. :D I figure it would be a good time to pick up some things at good prices. They may reduce more later but did not want to wait too long as the selection will be less.

Thistle you have an excuse...can't you say "but i need it for woooooork...". I have no excuses for most of my myriads of books, and will not be going anywhere near a closing bookstore!! Besides, i'm supposed to be reading the textbooks i picked up already for my classes starting this fall...bleck!:hide

Yeah Heather, actually it's a great excuse, and tax deductible to boot! But I seem to have a lot of overlap going on... I can probably justify that by saying it's good to have different perspectives.
Books are good things though, and I don't think you need an excuse to own myriads of them. At least, you don't have to give me an excuse if you want more!

A few of my favorites, most are older books also...

Another vote here for Root Cellaring by Mike and Nancy Bubel (a wealth of info in that book!)

Successful Berry Growing by Gene Logsdon

Perennial Garden by Cox and Cox

From Seed to Seed by Suzanne Ashworth

I am enjoying and making note of some of these other recommendations also, since my collection has plenty of room to grow. :)

Here's a few more I like:
AHS Pests and Diseases by Pippa Greenwood (and others) This is a great book which I have been overlooking on my shelves, but rediscovered just now because of Carols post. It has excellent photos and color drawings of , um, Pests and Diseases!

A couple more from Rodale -
Garden Insect, Disease and Weed Identification Guide, by Miranda Smith and Anna Carr

Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials by Ellen Phillips and C. Colston Burrell
Lots of color photos in this one!
