Was at HD last night, they had Bougainvilleas in some cool colors. The vines where very small about 1 foot. I know in the south they get very big. I am in zone 5 with no place to over winter one. How fast do they grow, is it worth growing as a annual? Thanks

I have kept mine in a pot for 25 years, have never even repotted it. It never fails to give me great color several times a year. I put it out in the summer, cut it back, and keep it indoors all winter.

Nyboy, I don't know if I can be much help to you since we are in totally different areas. But I will say that bougainvilleas are very pretty. They are also alittle messy since they are always dropping their old blooms. I assume since they are selling them in your area that they should grow by winter time. I don't know how to winterize them but I'm sure someone else will pop in soon.

I always say, if you can afford that plant why not try it? Over here they are not that expensive. I think they are worth a try. They are very dramatic and add hugh color to any area.

Where I grew up in southern California they are really, really, REALLY big. I don't know how fast they'd grow in a colder climate though.

I have had one in the same pot for about 10 years. Indoors under lights in the winter, it blooms beautifully, as it does in the summer outside. It tends to get gangly, and I have cut it back to stumps a few times. Comes right out of it. Mine has varigated leaves and hot pink "blossoms."
