When January hits.... when it comes to your garden... what is on your mind?! What are you doing involving your garden at this time? Also post what zone or state you are in while you do this. Especially any of you tropical people who may be out sowing another round of carrots or trimming your roses!!!! :coolsun

But for real....:mow

All I can think of was I started a few tricky seeds last year, and ordered some extra clearance seed for my veggies and flowers. Beyond that, we actually had some snow, so we held off until the end of the month, beginning of Feb, to do any additional building.

What about you?! :hu

There is a really HUGE purpose to this question... I'll explain later. Thanks! :thumbsup

What am i doing now?
I'm nursing some garlic that just went in the ground, watching my stevia which i cut all but to death, and watering my gerber daisies when needed - which isn't much right now. That's in my one 4x4 garden with the single ray of sun we get. I'm waiting for last year's tomatoes to ripen (all five of them) so i can bring them in and have a nice salad.

In the mean time, i'm planning where my serious vegetable garden will lie when the sun-blocking trees come down and we put in fruit trees that will be pretty but not block so much sun and allow us to have a serious garden.

In regard to prettiness, i'm figuring what i can manipulate that is already here to be beautiful next spring. Imagining trellisses and whatnot.

Oh yeah, and my stevia cuttings are hoping for life on top of the microwave. :fl I'm sure they will be joined by other seedling types as winter progresses.

My geographical info is in my signature or something. :frow

January is spent putting in seed & plant orders. Over my Xmas - New Year's holiday, I go over my notes from the year and the crop rotation, and figure out what I want to order for the coming year. A lot of things I want sell out very quickly, so the orders all have to be submitted in January or I'm outta luck.

This is a lovely thing to do while DH is, for example, blowing 3' of snow off the driveway. ;)

Also, I try to get my maple sap stuff in order. The spiles, being sort of weird things that nevertheless must go through the dishwasher, end up in unlikely places. Mid-February is maple-tapping season in these parts.

I've been idly contemplating building an aquaponics system for indoor tomatoes & peppers & such using my turtle's current tank as a source of fertilizer and water, but I doubt I will actually get around to it.

Not really in the garden, but poultry orders also need to be submitted in January.

I am thinking about the frost warnings and hope I don't forget one or two of my babies.

I counted all of my potted plants yesterday. In my little bitty back yard I have 115 ,this does not include my cuttings! Plus a lot in the front square er' yard.
They all would have to come inside should I see a frost coming!
A low of the upper 30's would have me moving about a third of them!
That is why I have a glass room setup but no plants in it to speak of.
It is a winter shelter.

I don't need to start seed indoors so early as my season is very long to grow things.

Joe

Edited to add; What is written above is what I will be thinking in Jan not now!

Come January, I am plotting and planning, which keeps me sane until I can actually get out there.....

I like to sort through all my seeds while looking over the extension service calendar and organize them into baggies according to planting time. I like to review my garden journal from the years prior to refresh my memory on what did or didn't do well for me. I try to plot everything out on graph paper to get some idea of where I'll be planting things and rotating crops.

I buy a lot of my seeds when they go on sale in the fall (I don't know how many of you guys have access to Southern States Co-ops, but they have the BEST quality seeds in bulk packs and they keep for years). I do a little catalog shopping to get some varieties of things that I can't get around here too. Then I get all my ducks in a row for seed starting in February and March.
