Thanks for sharing that Boggy. I really needed it! This is my first year successfully starting broccoli from seed and while that has been a significant victory for me, I am off on a few other aspects and don't think I'll get large heads on my spring broccoli. This article has given me some much needed tips for my fall crop though--I will put it to good use!

I planted all my brassicas on a new plot of garden where I had my meat chickens penned last year. You'd think that would make for some rich soil, but appearantly they want more! I guess I'll be making some compost tea then... I have some blood meal sitting around, so I'll try that too. A couple of them just started making heads. Maybe I'm not too late...

Next year, I'll start them and plant them at least 2 weeks sooner. Our weather has been freakishly unpredictable this year and while we started out too cold for a later period than usual, we immediately switched to too hot and humid. :/ After all that cold rain moved out, we've been in the low 90's this past week or so. So muggy out there. Blah!

Journey, If you see a couple flowers, you need to harvest the broccoli for sure...I am in zone 4, but I grow and harvest broccoli all summer. Once you see the flowers, it is about to bolt- Don't worry you can eat a few flowers! Enjoy!

My broccoli never formed a head this spring. I hope to have better luck with the fall crop.
