A thousand Growing Degree Days, that is!

I thought I'd mention accumulated growing season warmth last week since there has actually been some around here. No, I better not complain anymore about cool weather. Predictions are for above 90f every day for this week after the 88 today!

Eleven Hundred Heat Units at the nearest weather station (Spokane)! That is just about the lowest where one could expect a ripe tomato. The Weather Service information (link) dates back to March 1st. That is kind of where my tomatoes are - the few that I cheated on and left tiny fruit on the plants coming out of the greenhouse ;). I didn't allow very much of that since I've found that ripening fruit keeps the plant from growing. Still, it has been nice to have a few Sungold cherries and there's a Bloody Butcher tomato outside the south window that looks just about ready for a snack!

Now, there's only a few places in the USA that haven't broken that 1,000 GDD threshold! They are on the Pacific Coast, MT, ND, MN, MI, ME - just a few. Summer's here!

I really have no complaints about our weather this summer. For once, we're having a terrific go of it. If i had only gotten my garden in on time things would be really coming along! Even the days that have been "hot" in the 90s have been breezy, so its been comfortable.

:D

Yes, the seed went in the potting mix just about the 1st of March. I've tried to keep it warm (with varying degrees of success), ever since. I'll post this picture on another thread and tell you more about this Bloody Butcher plant and its neighbors.
