I'm thinking of replacing my chickens with chicks next year. One of the breeds I'm considering is a Buff Orphinton. I had one that I really enjoyed but she went broody every 2 months. This was a pain since I had to separate her in the coop. I'm hoping that this was just an unusual case.

Those of you who had Buffs before, how often did yours go broody?

I always have some Buff Orpingtons. I think they are the best chicken. Beautiful, soft feathers, gentle, and long lived. I don't recall any going broody.

so lucky, I've seen that chart. I guess I'm looking for a different answer!

I also want a speckle sussex sooooo badly. According to that chart, they go broody also. :barnie

O.K. everyone, what about your speckle sussex's?

Sorry, couldnt resist. This is actually an EE, not a Speckled Sussex, though her daddy is a Speckled Sussex. Shes a 28 week old pullet that hatched seven chicks this past Wednesday. Didnt take her long to go broody.

I kept one Speckled Sussex hen from Cackle for two years. She never did go broody.

Mary, youll find that some do and some dont go broody with practically every breed. Its just pure luck.

Yup! My Black Australorp has just gone broody. . . again this year. I will attempt to stop her this time. Last time I gave in and let her hatch a clutch. I would never let her hatch her own egg and pass the excessive broody-ness in my flock.

If you can, the shipping will probably be really high. I am paying a premium price for the 7 chicks I have on order, but you have to do that sometimes, to get what you want. I wish we lived closer, so I could let you have one of the Speckled Sussex I have ordered. Hmmm...Maybe I could justify a trip to California? With a chicken under my wing, lol.
