It would have been fine with me if I'd fed him to the chickens but I missed the opportunity. Yes, it has been a little too warm here :p and the meat already had some spots :/. There aren't too many treats that chickens like more than members of this family - summer squash, winter squash, cucumbers, melons :). I've steamed Jack other years, froze him and parceled him out to the chicken on a piecemeal basis ;). This year, there are other pumpkins and I just buried Jack.

I did this one year and was digging around in that garden bed the next spring. Unearthed Jack! Because of the very cool (if not frozen) conditions of the soil here thru the winter - you can bury something green the first of November and dig it up, still green, the 1st of April.

Orange Jack wasn't green going into the ground and he was orange when I uncovered him that spring. You wouldn't believe the "knot" of earthworms!!!

Funny, Bay.

The neighbor came out to talk to me about dahlias while I was carrying Jack to his final resting place.

She had the same question :D.
