The weekend I tried making apple cider, i purchased a case of canning jars. I am wondering is there anything different about them and regular glass jars. Can you can with empty Ragu sauce jars?

On Ragu jars, can not re-use the lids for a seal. My mom use to use mayonnaise jars. Not recommended but they worked. Glass not as thick as canning jars.

I've used Classico pasta jars in the past but stopped when I heard you weren't supposed to because of the thinness of the jars. I never had one break though. I have had a canning jar break when I accidently tapped it into another. Realized it when the water started looking tomatoey.

You can use them but the risk is exactly what they said, the glass is not as thick so you have some risk of it breaking. Does that mean they will break each and every time without fail? No, just that they are more likely to break. They don't break when Ragu use them, at least they don't sell those if one does break. If you need some drama in your life, go for it. You will probably be OK but you'll be living a bit on the edge.

It takes a lot of band aids to do what I do!

We used mayonnaise jars for many a long years and Mom said she's never had one break, though the regular canning jars have broken many times. I'd say the jars used in commercial canning of products would be~by necessity~of a much more durable strength than those made for home canning. I'm thinking their products are put through a much more intense heat/steam process than we can create in a home canning situation, just due to the liability than can occur.

Nyboy, they make the Ball Mason jars in blue and green glass also, fyi. And a variety of sizes and "quilted crystal". We use the quilted jam and the tall 12oz. jars for drinking glasses (after the kids broke all my regular drinking glasses!) I think they'd look nicer than assorted reused pasta jars too, especially if you intend to give any away. If you used the 12 oz. tall jars or wide-mouth pints, just pop off the lid and drink straight from the jar. :)

Was there a problem with lids sealing on mayo jars? Journey I have a client who has a weekend hobby farm. Every Christmas she gives home made jelly in the quilted jar.
