It has been a long time since I've lived in "melon country." With the few I have, harvesting is mostly a little bit of an art rather than a science for me. I hold it a little. I'm looking for that change in the skin, a yellowing, and the fragrance of a ripe melon !
You can use the "dry tendril" method. When the tendril nearest the melon dries and shrivels, the melon should be ripe.
