Yesterday afternoon, my wife and I attended a cat show in Portland, Ore. at the Double Tree Inn. Several hundred of the public attended to see over 200 cats in row upon row of cat display enclosures. About 20 Persian long haired cats, 4 Main Coons, 4 Japanese no tails, 3 hairless, 5 Siamese ( we had owned 7 over the years) 2 Abysinians, and the rest were alley cats ??? Judging was in progress as quite a few crazy cat ladies in the audience were grinning ear to ear and whooping and hollering and swaying with their hands in the air at anything the judges were saying or looking at. One lady in the audience told her husband that she is buying a male Persian long haired cat that just was given a blue ribbon at ANY PRICE. He just hung his head down and didn't say a word. There was a huge display for a cat rescue with 4 ladies there. They didn't have any cats there but they said that their rescued cats go for $100 to $300 each depending of breed and age. We had owned 7 Siamese totally indoor cats due to coyotes and never payed a penny of any of them. They were selling every type of kitty toy, bed, 3 types of kitty litter, cary cage, cloths, cages, scratching posts, as well as their propaganda literature. There were about 10 other vendors selling their wares. Going through those displays the rescue prices were mostly 2 x to 5 x the price. We talked to one couple Siamese breeders from San Diego, Cal. there showing 2 females that had won a blue , and a red ribbon. They sell their kittens for $950 each after 8 weeks of age, had their first shots , and NO kitten leaves their house until they were SPAYED or NEUTERED. Hey , if I pay those prices, I should have a choice if I breed that cat or do my own spay or neuter. :hu Where we live, Cats are coyote snacks , after all:\

It's hard to wrap my mind around all of that, though I know it happens all over the nation, it's still hard to imagine folks using money in that manner. It's just not in our wheelhouse. I went to a chicken show this past year and it wasn't as messy as all of that (still found it stunningly abnormal for that many people to be that obsessed about an animal that I eat for food)but I've heard it can get even worse, with chickens going for in the thousands and judges even having groupies and such.

Can't imagine paying all that money for a breeder quality cat and never being able to use the bloodlines.

Cats don't last long here either but there's no way we will keep them indoors. Survival of the fittest in these woods.

I have spent many many years and thousands of dollars developing my bloodline. No one but me decides which dogs are bred and which are not. My kennel name is on every puppy's papers. Over the years I have changed what I want in my dogs. When I was young and foolish it was all about what would win in the ring. Now it is all about temperament and health. I have had Veterinarians from all over the country fly to me for a puppy.

Cat, in the words of my granddaughter, "There's no such thing as a 'free' horse'."

I expect she heard that from her disgruntled grandfather after his wife was gifted with a 'free' horse, pony, and donkey in one fell swoop. That's when grandmother had to go back to work to pay for feed.
