A few weeks ago I was looking into the breed Russian Orloff. Loved the way they looked. Loved their dispositions. Couldn't find any within a resonable distance for a reasonable price.
Someone on BYC suggested that I look at Sandhill Preservation Center. BINGO! They have them - and for a great price. But they only sell chicks in groups of 25. Well I certainly don't need 25 more chicks, so I went back on BYC and asked if anyone wanted to split an order.
The next thing I knew, two other folks wanted in on an order. In the mean time, I found out that Orloffs aren't really all that great of egg layers... So I switched to blue Jersey Giants (4) and Exchequer Leghorns (4). The other 2 made up the rest of the order. We decided that 2 of us would send payment to the third, she would order and receive the chicks just before the big spring swap meet and bring them to the meet along with all the ones she was selling. We would meet her there and pick up our chicks (and do a little more chick shopping too).
Well, since yesterday afternoon:
*One of the folks has had to back out of the order.
*At the same time, someone else contacted me wanting to get in on it - and the woman receiving the chicks wanted to up her chick count. Bumping our count over 25 - but not enough to make a second order.
*Since I started this whole thing (why is it that I seem to be always STARTING things????) I offered to bump up my count a little bit to help make up a second order......
Several texts, a few PMs and suddenly I've agreed to buying 4 giants, 4 leghorns and 12 assorted heavy breed chicks....

Wait.. what???? Didn't I just say yesterday that I did NOT want 20 more chicks??????

Oh brother! I know what happened to the friend that backed out...she stopped a minute and had her sponsor do some counting!

Is your coop big enough for the population explosion? I always wanted a Jersey Giant or two, but my coop is small, and I would have to rehome the 8 bantys a Jersey would displace. That would be the 7 unplanned bantys....

Cane, I'm just glad I don't live close enough to you to get involved in your chicken math, I fear I'd have dh out there building chicken condos.

I just ordered 20 Buff Rock cockerels for mid-February from Ideal. They should arrive Friday the 13th. One of those will be next year's flock master. The others, well I'll be running out of chicken in the freezer about the time they get big enough. I don't consider that chicken math since it means I'll only hatch about 20 of my own chicks later in the year. Hopefully my broodies will cooperate.

Cane can you sell some of them at the swap? That will give you more room to bring others home.

And that is exactly what went wrong for me... I called my 'sponsor' and she said "Great price! Count me in for 10!"

Since I have the usual luck with male/female chick ratios - any that are looking to be male by the time they leave the brooder will go into the bacherlor pad till processing day. It's really frowned upon to sell while walking around at the swap. You're supposed to buy booth space. But I might be able to trade a few - "Hey cool! You've got naked necks! I have not idea what's in the box but I'll give you 2 of them for one of yours."

Lucky for me, I've found a little feed store that sells a locally milled chicken feed for a great price.
Also - having a room mate who refuses to eat leftovers means that I often clean out the fridge and carry a mixing bowl full of 'questionable' goodies to the chickens.
Have you ever looked into the trigger feeders? I have almost zero waste, which helps the feed bill a little too.
