I figured it was a pretty useless post, but I posted in byc about my chicken. Nobody has responded.

Anyways, about a month ago I got 3 new adult hens from a friend. Since I don't have a quarintine area, and I know the chickens well enough to know they weren't sick, I just tossed them all together. (I know.... bad chicken keeper.) Anyways, they fought for a little while and had a few little more the meaningless injuries (one had part of her comb ripped off, and a couple had small holes, but nothing super serious.) Well, yesterday I noticed that Louise had something that looked like dirt on her beak sort of below her nostril. I couldn't catch her to look at it so my husband helped me today and it looks like a scab has started growing into her beak!? I posted some pictures on byc but since I'm now on the kindle, I can't post them.

byc post
Here is the link tho if you would like to see them.

I don't know if thie is something serious or not. Any ideas or suggestions?

Hmmm... It does look sort of similar, but there is no discharge from her nose. Also, there was nothing there beforehand. It could be tho..... I surely hope it's not. That would seriously suck badly..... :/

I looked at your photos... since the chickens were fighting, she most likely received an injury and is forming a scab over the injury. One of two things could result. When the scab falls off the injury would have healed. Or , since the outside surface of the beak is a horny material, the scab will deposit scafolding and mineralize into a distorted growth that will be not too atractive, but nothing to wory about.

:weee

I was thinking the same thing. Hubby says I worry too much and that it was nothing. I told him that I wasn't "freaking out" (tho, I was just a tiny bit on the inside.. hehe) and that I was simply posting to see what some other opinions were.

:thumbsup

Nope.... it is avian pox. :(

We were out doing more examinations and I caught our little cochin and her eye is swollen and she has one pox spot on her comb. I put them in separate brooders with food and water with electrolytes in it. All I can do is hope that none of the rest of them get it I guess... :/ I'm still not for certain that what Louise has is pox... but I put her in the brooder box anyways.
