About 4 ;00 yesterday afternoon just at the rush hour time, a truck and trailer transporting hundreds of Cornish cross chickens to a processing facility on State Highway 503 ( about 6 miles from our house ) made an illegal "U" turn at a cross street and overturned when it's front tire went off the road and into the ditch. Hundreds of chickens found themselves free as a bird and took advantage of their suddenly found freedom. I arrived just in time to take my place in line on this 4 lane highway 2 1/2 miles back from the accident. Took 45 minutes to travel with the moving parking lot to take a detour scenic tour of the countryside on a narrow 2 lane country road to reach I 5 to then travel to pick up my wife in a park and ride in Vancouver, Wa. She was quite irritated with my tardiness :barnie :duc until I explained the reason for the delay. :hu

those chickens won't last long in the wild if they could even make it past the ditch...

I was once behind a truck loaded with chickens in traffic jam on I95. They where stacked in cages on a open truck bed, with a tarp over top and sides. I felt so sorry for them, last hours of life could not have been comfortable.

Outside of Angels Camp, along highway 4, there are quite a few turkey barns. When its time for harvest, those turkeys are loading up into cages, stacked on a flat bed and hauled away. You can always tell its harvest time by the white feathers lined along both side of the two lane highway!!:ep

On today's noon news, the reporter said that there was an animal rights advocate that was sited for interfering with workers trying to catch the loose chickens after the truck and trailer overturned into a ditch.. The REAL STORY as told to me by my neighbor who happened to arrive at this intersection as the altercation occured... the animal rights woman was wearing a PETA T- shirt, was swinging a live chicken by one leg at a highway patrol officer and screaming her head off as workers were picking / scooping up chickens one at a time ( there were groups of chickens just standing there and easily picked up ) by about a dozen workers and placed them into wire boxes, then loading them onto another truck and trailer. By the time I arrived to this intersection, a crane had already pulled the truck out of the ditch and most of the chickens were already safely placed onto another truck. A few dozen chickens were still just standing around in the field as workers were walking up to them and picking them up one at a time then placing each one into wire boxes. No running nor any chasing, just efficient careful handling by all involved. :)
