I love looking at all the houses done up in Christmas lights. last year a house in my town won best light display in country. Some homes are very simple and some go crazy. Any one know how the tradition of outside lights came about? I have a laser projector, and love it no more untangling strings of lights.

I love looking at the Christmas lights too. But we never put any up. How it became a custom to decorate the outside of homes with lights, I don't know.

My hometown, Kansas City MO, and neighborhood, Country Club Plaza, has had an outside lighting tradition since 1925.

The grandmother next door has a wonderfully lit up front yard. She and her small granddaughters were out yesterday adding a snowman.

Lots of people here put up lights. It isn't usually very tough to do in early December. Then January comes ..

. and, many never get around to taking them down.

One year I went to visit my uncle in April, he still had Christmas lights and turned them on every night. Soon after I left Paul McCartney who lived next door, sent his housekeeper over to ask they be taken down.

Out here in the sticks houses are often way back in the trees and mostly don't get all lit up. The ones closer to the road will have lights though.

We have some new neighbors across the road, renting the loud kids house while they look for a place to buy. They did the front porch and garage and the shrubs and even a scrubby pine close to the road with lights. Looks so pretty at night.
I'm making them a gift bag of bread and cinnamon rolls as a welcome and a thank you for their cheery contribution to the neighborhood. :)
