I just got a call from my friend Nancy, for my order of fall mums. Every fall her church has a mum sale, they do very well. They sell large plants much cheaper then big box stores. I always order 10 plants, I just think of it as a donation to the Church. By the time of the sale I am gardened out. They never get planted, I line my front steps with them. When flowered out, I move them to a out of sight place for winter. They never survive the winter. I found many plants if not planted die from being in pots. Maybe this fall will be different and they get planted.

You enjoyed them on the steps and helped the church out. That's important. Don't worry if you never plant them.

Yesterday at Home Depot a woman was return a bouganvillia in a one gallon pot that was all shriveled up. I told my husband the store shouldn't refund her money if she was dumb enough not to water it. I can see returning it if something else was wrong with the plant.

I'm with Mary, don't stress over not keeping them going in the ground. If you did that every year pretty soon you'd be a mum farmer.

Just enjoy them while they look good. A lot of mums are not intended to be hardy anyway.

Potted fall mums need to be planted in-ground as early as possible in the fall. For most of us, the mums are used for fall color while still in their pots. By the time we are done (or the mums are done) it is usually too late for planting before winter in the colder zones of 4 to 6-ish.

It is a choice. . . color this year or mums for the next year. Most of us choose color now and rely on hope and prayers and lots of mulch for next year's growth.

I consider those mums in the same category as Christmas poinsettias. Just something pretty, seasonal and temporary.
I have kept poinsettias but they are so ugly when in between, Ain't nobody got time for that!
