A friend has asked me to research grapes that will grow in a climate that gets as cold as - 30 F in the winter and is at a 4800 elevation. He wants to grow red grapes there to make nonalcoholic grape juice to sell.

Does anyone know anybody who grows red grapes in such conditions successfully, and if so, what varieties do they grow? I read that Frontenac will grow in those conditions, but I'm wondering whether there are others?

And if you do know of someone, I'd be interested in any growing tips and experience they might care to share?

Thanks for your help,

Clare

not really sure but check into a grape supplier called Double A Vineyards. i got their catalog recently and they are out of NY. they can send you a catalog of different types they sell, their uses and climate zones they will tolerate. are you looking for seedless or seeded grapes? you can use either for making juice but sometimes the seedless grapes growing in very cold climates will still produce seeds. i have a Canadice seedless that has always given me seeds in each berry, but that is because ive been growing it too far north for it's liking.

i know one of the grape cuttings i just bought is supposed to be good down to zone 3. it is called Elvira but it is more like a white grape i think.

I have heard that Valient is an extremely cold hardy and very productive juice grape. Pretty sure it's a red.
King of the North is a cold hardy red wine grape.
