This year will be known as the "year of the bug". In addition to cucumber beetles, I now have cutworm!!! So, after planting I am putting on the collar around each transplant. I noticed a really cool extra benefit. They are great for watering. I fill each cup/container with water and don't waste a lot of water in the surrounding dirt. This works perfectly for new, small plants!! So, I have something to thank the cutworms for!

I wrap newspaper around the stems and make sure it is at least 2" under the soil.I've never had any cut down using this method.

Next year I'm going to start my seeds in toilet tissue rolls and plant them in the garden with the cardboard roll intact.

I have some of the prettiest broc and cabbage and brussel sprouts this year. I planted them and then cut the bottom out of a see through solo plastic cup and set them over the plants. They are growing great and dont seem to have a pest problem (knock on wood) It kept bugs bunny out of them until they could stand on their own too.
