Is ther a list of this kind of thing somewhere? Or maybe we can discuss it. I know a bunch of plant foods contain toxic compounds.

I just learned that beans, Phaseolus vulgaris, are as well, and was surprised that beans that are not boiled and cooked in low heat can actually become more toxic than raw beans....weird!

we also grow a lot of manioc so know the dril for cooking.

But this got me wondering, what else? seems a lot of south american developed foods have a toxic aspect...or is that just my ignorance?

The only ones I can think of are greens that contain oxalic acid. That would be spinach and beet greens, and of course rhubarb leaves ( but who eats those? ) Oxalic acid interferes with the absorption of calcium, but it's not really anything to be too concerned about unless you're eating bushels of of it.

Potatoes of course can develop high amounts of solanine if allowed to green, and the sprouts, stems and leaves contain enough to make you really sick.

Certain mushrooms... apple seeds...

cultivated mushroom (not just the wild types) contain a toxin. still best to eat them cooked but the edible kinds contain much less than the wild types. (btw, this is according to one of my cookbooks)

peach pits also contain a toxin. careful with them around chickens or they could make them appear drunk if they over indulge.
