I took a picture of DH's compost pile he built Monday. I can smell it, so went to see if I could see it smoking and it was, so I took a picture. If you look close you can see the smoke.

There was a barrel full of old bedding that was so heavy he could barely move it. It had rained and snowed on it, so a lot of water. He tipped it over and got all the water in a bucket and poured it over the top of the bin. It is full of rabbit manure and urine soaked bedding anyway and a lot of straw and leaves.

Well, the smoke lasted about a week. The weather turned cold and there was no getting it going. DH took it all out and turned it and put it back in and it did get warm and we had rain and he had it covered, but would not get hot. My soil experiment with the tomatoes showed we will have a lot of weeds with this compost. I cooked some of the compost, but was not at 180 or over long enough, which is what I read it would take to kill the weed seeds. DH and I are thinking of getting some fresh cow manure and mixing with what we have and see if we can get this cooking.
