Corigated Pipe Around Tomatoes Pic Stokes Seed Magazine

I received my seed catalog from Stokes. On page 48 there is a picture of a ladies garden who has black pipe around her tomato plants. Does anyone else do this? Do you still need to stake them?

I stake mine, I want to cage them.... but those pipes and bucket bases I see are for catching falling tomatoes, keeping low growers off the ground and routing water closer to the tomato plant's roots. I don't think they aid in holding up the plant?

Then again, I may be thinking of the wrong thing. Do you have an image of this?
