So I have started looking into a new corn variety for next year, and I notice different species being divided up by their productivity. What does that mean? Isn't it always/usually one ear per corn?

I think that a lot of varieties produce 4+ ears per stalk, but I'm pretty new to corn (just started growing it this year).

By species you must mean dent/pop/sweet corn, etc?

Productivity? Usually by sweetness gene, maturity, color.
Kernel rows are even rows. Each leaf connection has the potential for an ear. There are genetics that put on a small ear at each node. Usually not a large ear.
