I have a couple questions about cucumbers. When should I pick them? When they are about the right size? When they are a certain color? I just don't know. I have four cucumber plants and a couple of the cukes look like I could pick them but others are rather yellow. What is causing the yellow ones?

I think I remember that the funny shapes are cause by not watering and then watering. OR how about inconstant watering.

Well, I'll know to pick them sooner in the future. Thanks!

They get consistent watering since we have an automatic system, but maybe the first ones were affected when they were transplanted.

Looks like it's just gone past it's prime picking stage. I usually get mine when they're no longer than 4"-5", but I only plant pickling cucumbers, so any larger than that I just slice and toss to the chickens, they don't seem to mind ;)

I have had the exact same problem with my cucumbers over the years. First, I usually plant way more than I need. Second, I get wrapped up in something else I need to do, so they get too big and go yellow. There are STILL EDIBLE, but they don't taste as sweet.
Try checking on them and picking them when they are still dark green, like this~

Also, find another use for the older ones. My horses LLLOOOVVVEEE it when I throw them the older cucumbers to eat!!
ALSO--
According to this article:
http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/veg...-cucumber-how-to-prevent-yellow-cucumbers.htm
"A yellow cucumber can also be the result of a virus, too much water, or a nutrient imbalance."
