I didn't know that one could just keep a dahlia tuber potted up in a sunny window all winter. I thought I would have to wrap and store it in a cool spot?

My sister babysat my potted dahlias while I was away on vacation. My largest, a dinnerplate called 'Maniac' bloomed for her while I was gone. She said it was gorgeous, and the spent blooms are sure pretty. I hope it blooms again. I left it at her house, since it's in a huge, heavy pot. I encouraged her to cut off the spent blooms to help it bloom again. I need to take her some Big Bud. It is the only one to bloom so far, but I have another dahlia I've brought home with me that has a big bud. I can't tell what color it is going to be yet. It also has two smaller buds.

She had only so many sunny spots, so she put the most advanced dahlias in them. The others she put on her shaded porch, so those are somewhat behind, I think, but she did fertilize them, and I've put Big Bud on them and expect to have buds and blooms before long. The foliage looks very healthy. I hope they have enough time left to go on and bloom. It's good they are in pots so I can take them inside if it gets cold early.

How often do you think I should fertilize them? I dissolved the Big Bud powder in water and poured it lavishly over the foliage. I think she had fertilized with Miracle-Gro earlier.

Dahlias are heavy feeders. If Big Bud is anything like miracle-gro, you could water with it once a week like you would for a houseplant.

Thanks for the info, journey.

They sure look wilty in the afternoon sun today. I'm wondering whether I should move them into the shade. I think I will. It's 93F. They may be in shock.
