Mike's radish thread got me thinking about, well... radishes! (What else?)

Have any of you tried or eaten a daikon before? I've never grown or eaten a single asian-type radish before. Do they taste like regular radishes, or are they milder due to larger size? Are they a radish meant to be planted in the fall (which is what I'm guessing) or a radish meant to be planted in the spring (when I prefer to plant my radishes.

I was thinking about crossing my long red radishes with a variety of daikon to get extra large, long red radishes.

Wait!

There are plenty of Vietnamese sandwich shops in the US now. If you stop at one or hit the Asian market on the right day, or wrong depending on your perspective, you can eat daikon radish in a sandwich.

They use paté in those things. I blame the French. The Vietnamese just thought that yeast bread went with paté. If you want one, you want both. At least they have the sense to slip a jalapeno pepper in there . . .

Personally, I'd just as soon have those julienned radishes and jalapenos on a buttered roll.

hoping the French will forgive him.

Our soil is definitely hardpanned... darn ducks. I see daikons in the produce section of the local Meijer's, so somebody must eat them. I might have to buy a few and try them for myself (since I haven't seen a Vietnamese sandwich shop yet). Maybe I'll get and extra few and see if I can get some seed from them (Any GMO daikons? Should I look at the country that they came from? Is that even a good idea? Might be easier and cheaper to just buy a packet of seed.)

What's made by the French, was probably made for the French. They keep the heads on prepared poultry.

You might like them, SeedO.

At one time, I thought that radishes just weren't for me. Then I realized that it is what is true about so much of garden produce -- harvest them at the right moment!

For Daikons, I imagine it is a long moment. They probably ship well but I also imagine that they could be grown most anywhere.

Steve is right, daikons are used in vietnamese cooking. There is a gourmet food truck that has a small bun with pork belly and pickled daikon that is soooo good. The taste of the radishe is hard to describe. Sort of sweet and pickled.
