@Nyboy thread about him trying to order grapes got me thinking about how some nurseries have restrictions on what states they can ship to. or you can only get certain plants from selected nurseries. sometimes its just a matter of having a phytosanitary certificate from the state the plants are coming from.

i know NH is restricted for certain plants like currants and gooseberries because of the White Pine Blister Rust (fungus) possibly being carried in on untested plants. there are some pond plants that are restricted due to being an invasive species.

Maine and Idaho i know you can't ship in potatoes. Washington state and NY seem to restrict apples and i guess NY also restricts grapes. I won't even say anything about California since they are restrictive on anything they don't approve of without the right permits. Citrus in both Florida and California because the growers are so concerned with some sort of citrus bug.

if anyone else can add other states that restrict certain plants being shipped into them please add to this list. if you know the reason why it is restricted please add that too!

California has inspection stations at the border and stop all vehicles to inspect for fruit, vegetables, etc. and will seize them if you are carrying them into the State. This is to protect agriculture ( Cal. has the 7th largest economy in the world ) from pests and deceases such as the Mediteranian fruit fly which is quite harmful appears from time to time that then immediately requires a spraying program for entire areas.

wow! great list! i almost forgot about the issue with firewood being imported from other states. i live on the NH/ME border and about 2 years ago people traveling into Maine for camping were being stopped on the border and having their firewood confiscated and replaced with locally harvested wood. they have been trying to stop certain wood boring bugs from traveling any further north and east.

Too many people know better than government people, and then transmit diseases, pests, or other problems. Just one of many problems hobbiests have created-lion fish, anacondas, etc...

There is usually a good reason for restrictions-wish DNR would listen.

Not just firewood from other states is banned in Wisconsin, but firewood from different areas of the state is banned. All that is accepted is local firewood -- to prevent the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer in Wisconsin.

currants/gooseberries are not allowed here in nc.... because of white pine blister rust.

Currant and gooseberry plants (the genus Ribes) cannot be legally imported into, or grown in, North Carolina because they serve as alternate hosts to the plant disease known as white pine blister rust. This is an old regulation established when young white pine plantations were threatened by this disease because of infected, wild currants growing in close proximity to them. There still is an active eradication program in the western area of North Carolina to eliminate wild currant hosts within a certain distance of white pine plantations. It is provided as a service by the N.C Forest Service .
Popular magazines and plant catalogs claim that the cultivated varieties of currants and gooseberries are resistant to the disease and do not pose a threat to white pine. These claims have yet to be backed by scientific evidence. Researchers in other states are currently testing various varieties for resistance. Their findings will impact what North Carolina does in regard to amending this regulation. Another option is to designate only certain areas of the state as regulated areas and limit movement of currants and gooseberries into these areas only. Currently, the entire state is regulated
